What Winning Means

What Winning Means

Today is a big day in the city of Ottawa for all wedding professionals. Tonight is the Ottawa Wedding Awards, a night where Ottawa’s top vendors and service providers are recognized by their clients, their peers, family and friends for their hard work and dedication to the wedding industry.

Again this year we have been nominated for Top Wedding Planner, as well, our wedding venue, Mountain Orchard Weddings has been nominated for Top Outdoor Venue and we are of course beyond excited. While I have been spending the day getting ready I have been doing a lot of thinking about why it’s important to me to win.

I know that winning is not everything and we don’t need to have a trophy or be recognized on a stage to know that we are doing great work, but to me it matters, a lot. It matters to me because I know how hard my team works and how hard I work and I think it would be great to be recognized and rewarded for that. I come from a generation where competition matters, where being the best is something you work for, and where being second best means you didn’t win. And I’m comfortable with that. That is what pushes me every single day to get up and do more and do better.

I have been working on this company for over 4 years and I have poured every ounce of passion I have into it. I have given up many things and sacrificed time and money for the success of ITM. My team, that has been built piece by piece, is exceptional and I have the upmost respect for each them. They work as hard as I do and are just as passionate about ITM as I am. Last night I posted on Facebook about my team texting me late at night to share something they are so excited about and that to me defines the passion they have for what we do.

Our team works hard on site, in the background and even when we’re not technically working we are analyzing, researching and thinking about how to perfect every event we’re working on or even dreaming about planning. Our standards for service are beyond what most have the energy to maintain but standards matter to me, perfection matters to me. My team will laugh when they read this because I am sure they can’t count how many times I say the words “that does matter” in a meeting, at an event or in a phone call.

Now if we don’t win what does that mean? Am I going to give up? Nope. Am I going to be upset? Of course a little. What are we going to do about it? We are going to work harder and increase our standards and our service so that we ensure next year we are on stage accepting not only one but many awards for every category we get nominated for. I have said it from day 1, my goal is to be the best…because it does matter. Why put this much energy and effort into being second best.

Tonight we will be sitting at our table anxiously waiting for the winner of our respective categories to be called and I will have butterflies and my fingers and toes will be crossed. We have grown by leaps and bounds in the last year and done some truly amazing things and I want my team to be recognized for everything they’ve done. I want every minute they have spent over the last year to be worth something more than a paycheque and a hand shake. They deserve this. ITM deserves this.

So please join me tonight in crossing your fingers and your toes for us and if you into praying then I’ll take some of that to.

Watch for us tonight on Facebook and Twitter…we’ll keep you up to date all night.

And thanks again for all of your support. Without all of you behind me this would not be what it is today.
