I had no idea my mom was planning a party for him until she called me and asked if I would decorate and look after booking a chef. My mom always goes all out, even when it may not be necessary. I often think that she forgets who the party is for. This time around, because I was in charge of some portions of the day, I was able to help her refocus on the main reason for the party and remind her who the guest of honour was.
My dad is a pretty simple guy. Isn’t big into the hoopla. He loves boats, cycling, his friends and drinking beer (the fancy beers). My favorite part of his party today was a little surprise we pulled together. My mom kept talking about a cake and all kinds of fancy food. I couldn’t stop her on the food but I was able to divert the cake to the perfect idea for my dad.
Just as everyone finished up dinner the local ice cream boat pulled up to the dock where the party was. We booked the ice cream boat for the party. We asked them to come by and serve ice cream cones to all the guests. My dad loves chocolate ice cream cones. It turns out so did all the guests at the party.
The ice cream was the perfect touch to make the party special for my dad. Something just for him. We kept the decorations simple, white linens, lights and paper lanterns. We had some lawn games and a radio playing in the background.
It was the perfect party for him. No hoopla.
When planning a party for someone else it is really important to remember who they are, what they love and what kind of event they would love. If it is a woman who loves to get dressed up then that’s what has to happen. If it is a guy who loves to golf then think about spending the day on the golf course and creating your own private golf tournament. If they love candy then put out a candy buffet. It is often so simple to pull off the perfect party if you pay close attention to the guest of honour.

It takes a long time to build something from scratch. LGBTQ + Wedding Show - Love is Proud started four years ago. The first year was good, attendance, interest in the event from area services and business, media. The second year was challenging, weather and show location impacted attendance at the event. This year was amazing! In order to make things work like you dreamed they would you have to be willing to listen, learn and make changes until you get the chemistry just right. We did it this year! All the pieces came together just like we have always dreamed it would. www.itmevents.ca/?portfolio=love-is-proud-2018... See MoreSee Less
