I am sitting at the dining room table at our cottage. It is Sunday morning at 9:30am. The house is quiet. Everyone is asleep except my oldest daughter Mekayla. My seat at the table looks out over our lake. It’s still frozen but it has me thinking about how much time I am going to get to spend sitting here this summer.
My husband and I are not old but we have started to think about retirement and how we want to spend the rest of our lives, once our girls have grown and moved on to start their own lives. Which, believe it or not, is less than 10 years away.
We have been faced with many challenges in our lives, challenges that have broken our hearts but have taught us a lesson that many will not learn until it is too late.
Although both of us love our jobs, Trevor is a firefighter and of course I am an event planner, we are both aware that life is not about your job. Life is about travelling the world and spending time together creating memories that truly define life.
Because of technology we are going to get to spend a great deal of time right here at our cottage this summer and I will be able to get as much work done here as I do sitting at home in an office but it will all be done while spending precious time with my family. And Trevor will be able to drive to work from here while the girls and I stay here, relaxation uninterrupted by his shift, and then he’ll be able to come right back here and take his post shift naps on the hammock.
I know that I am truly blessed but I believe that we are all just as blessed. Knowing how blessed you truly are only requires you to take the time to live in this moment. Not the moment that your neighbour lives in, not the moment that the rich and famous live in. Your moment. Take a minute and look around you right now. Do you have a roof over your head, is your belly full, do you have beautiful children, are you healthy? Those are all things that make you blessed. Those are the only things that are going to matter when it is your turn to take on your next journey beyond this world.
Happy Sunday everyone.
