It’s Just Like Game Day

Have you ever wondered what goes through an event planner’s mind on an event day? I realized this morning as I prepare for our tv interview for an event this weekend that it’s like game day for athletes.

I found myself thinking about Saturday morning today while I was in the shower. What if a vendor doesn’t like where they placed them? Ok, no problem, we’ll switch them out with another company to somewhere more suitable. What if the set up is running late? We have a great team, everything is going to be fine. Then as I was sitting on my bed putting on my socks I found myself thinking about the interview today and contemplating the questions that might be asked and formulating well thought out responses in my head. “What makes this show different?” and my response will start with “Thank you for asking that, it’s a great question. In our discussions with…”

Like making sure you have your uniform washed and packed, I found myself in a panic this morning because I couldn’t find the pants I had decided I wanted to wear. Not to worry, I found them! In my bag from our weekend away. Phew! No time for a wardrobe reset. It would be like forgetting your running shoes and although you borrowed a pair from another player you’d be distracted all day because they just don’t feel the same.

Event day is even worse then today as I get ready because every detail of the event is running through your head. Trying to make sure you haven’t forgotten anything. I am going to take a lesson from my girls who both play competitive basketball and force myself to take a few minutes on the morning of an event and visualize it’s successful execution. Just like when my girls visualize themselves going in and scoring a basket I am going to visualize smiling faces, hand shakes and many thank you’s.
