Corporate and Special Event Planning

FEO Conference – Part 7

In the afternoon on Saturday I attended another session given by a supplier, which again is an interesting perspective because they see all kinds of events, from the inside out. Often as event planners we are so focussed on what we are doing we might miss some of the stuff suppliers see and are comparing to the hundreds of other events they see.

This session was put on by Chad Shennett, Director of Operations at Event Water Solutions.

I love this saying…

“Festivals are destinations, not just places to see bands”

I couldn’t agree more. I love music but I can tell you it doesn’t take me long to get bored sitting and listening to music. I can’t remember a time I ever chose a destination based on the band that was playing. I want an experience. I want to see and do things. I want to experience something, something about the local area, something that will make me remember that moment in my life.

Festivals that do it best in his perspective do some of the following things…

  • address the complaints
  • do the extras well
  • free charging stations
  • lockers
  • arcade
  • water slides (for hot summer events)
  • misting stations (again for hot summer events)
  • free wifi
  • toilet paper stations
  • free water stations
  • use words like “community building opportunities” instead of “sponsorship”
